Category Technologist (based in Butterworth, Penang)
About the role
The Category Technologist is part of the Research, Development & Application (RD&A) team. He/she will perform core tasks in providing technical expertise and solution on assigned raw materials category and be accountable for technical project management and project execution by working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
The successful candidate will have strong technical knowledge in a broad range of food ingredients and its applications, cost drivers and commercial markets, has superior organizational and problem-solving skills, and is able to manage multiple projects while meeting timelines
Key responsibilities
- A subject matter expert giving technical advice to the regional RD&A Scientists on selection of raw materials
- Perform new raw material functionality assessment, documentation review and coordinate plant trial runs to qualify the new materials
- To provide support to resolve on quality/operational issues related to raw materials
- Drive and execute the raw materials optimization and improvement projects in partnership with Category Buyer and communicating the progress status to all the relevant stakeholders
- Collaborate with procurement, supply chain and operations team to optimise usage of raw material stock and to review for substitution in situation of stock shortage
- Review and approve new raw material code creation, code extension and code deactivation
- Custodian of Raw Materials codes within category portfolio and accountable for technical aspects of raw materials and initiate documentation request to suppliers i in partnership with Regulatory Affairs and Category Buyers
- Manage global raw material code consolidation projects
Qualifications and skills
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Food Science/Food Technology/Food Engineering or related qualification
- 1 to 2 years experience in food, beverage industry in product development or quality assurance with hands-on knowledge of food ingredients
- Understand HACCP, GMP, HALAL and FSSC22000 certificate requirements
- Possess a fundamental knowledge of food manufacturing processes, food safety program and Hazard Analysis (HACCP) and process control procedures / manuals
- Able to work independently, at flexible hours, with minimum supervision.
- Well-developed communication skills and can communicate with both internal and external contacts and stakeholders at all levels.
- Demonstrates the technical/functional skills to fulfil the needs of the role, continually develops expertise, determined to seek out and meet challenges
- Excellent interpersonal skills and organisational skills
- Should be comfortable working in a fast moving and growing global environment where accountability, quality, timeliness are key components
