PPTI Lecturer Achieved Groundbreaking Halal Postbiotic Innovation

PTI extends its congratulations to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Joo Shun and the entire research team for their pivotal role in developing Malaysia’s pioneering halal postbiotic technology.
This remarkable achievement, spearheaded by USM in collaboration with Biotenova and Pharm-D Health Science Berhad, translates homegrown research into high-value scientific innovations using local biological resources such as Musang King durian and cabbage.
Dr. Tan’s contributions helped produce patented postbiotic ingredients, including LASSICA K014®, ACASEI™, and PLANTACT®. The technology bridges academia and industry, serving the healthcare, skincare, oral care, pet wellness, agriculture, and aquaculture sectors.
Aligned with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) “One Health” framework, the innovation demonstrates potent antimicrobial activity against antibiotic-resistant pathogens while supporting digestive and immune health.
The project has earned prestigious accolades, including a Silver Award at the Star Outstanding Business Awards (SOBA) 2025, as well as a Gold Medal and the Asian Invention Excellence Award at ITEX 2026.
Dr. Tan’s dedication exemplifies USM’s commitment to transforming local research into practical technologies that benefit both society and industry. The university community is immensely proud of this benchmark accomplishment, which contributes to positioning Malaysia as a leader in biotechnology innovation.
