Dr. Tan Joo Shun is an Associate Professor at the Bioprocess Technology Division, School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and Lab Manager of the Biofermentation Unit at the Analytical Biochemistry Research Centre (ABrC), overseeing 150 L and 750 L bioreactor facilities. His research expertise lies in bioprocess engineering, microbial fermentation technology, fermented food innovation, and precision fermentation, with interests in lactic acid bacteria, probiotics, postbiotics, microbial production of functional biomolecules, recombinant proteins, and sustainable biotransformation of food and agro-industrial wastes into value-added ingredients. He has published more than 150 scientific publications, secured 5 patents, and led numerous national, international, and industry-funded research projects exceeding RM3 million. Recognised as a World Top 2% Scientist (2025), he has received multiple innovation awards, including the Asian Invention Excellence Award at ITEX 2026. He is also a Visiting Professor, keynote and invited speaker, Associate Editor of Malaysian Applied Biology, and provides consultancy and training in fermentation technology, bioprocess development, and microbial product innovation. He is also the Co-founder and Director of Biotenova Sdn. Bhd., a USM spin-off company focusing on probiotics and postbiotics development.
