TS. DR. NORHANIZA AMIL

"Understanding indoor and outdoor exposures in a changing climate helps us protect public health and create healthier places to live and work."

Expertise:

  1. Atmospheric Chemistry
  2. Air and Noise Pollution Monitoring and Control
  3. Environmental Risk Assessment and Public Health
  4. Environmental Monitoring Technology
  5. Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment

Ts. Dr. Norhaniza Amil, known to many as Dr. Hani, is a Professional Technologist and lecturer in the Environmental Technology Division, School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia. Her expertise bridges environmental science, particularly atmospheric chemistry, and safety science, with applications in environmental, occupational and public health. Her research focuses on fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), aerosol characterisation, particle number concentration (PNC) and particle number size distributions, and indoor air quality (IAQ). She combines field monitoring, laboratory chemical analysis and receptor modelling to identify pollution sources, assess exposure and evaluate environmental and human-health risks.

Working with academic, government and industry partners, Dr. Hani investigates household air pollution (HAP), cooking and biomass emissions, transboundary haze and occupational exposures. Her expertise also encompasses air and noise pollution monitoring and control, chemical safety, and occupational safety and health (OSH) risk management. Her developing research examines combined air pollution and heat exposures in tropical indoor and outdoor environments, with longer-term relevance to non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention. Through collaborative research and student mentorship, she seeks to translate scientific understanding into evidence that supports cleaner air, safer workplaces and healthier communities.
