Dr. Japareng Lalung is an associate professor at University Sains Malaysia. He holds a first degree in Ecology from Universiti Malaya and has worked as a Project Manager for the Scientific Monitoring of Putrajaya Lake and Wetlands with Unit Perundingan Universiti Malaya, as well as a Water Resources Manager at Puncak Niaga Sdn. Bhd in Kuala Lumpur.

Dr. Jap pursued a master’s degree in Water Science, Policy, and Management at the University of Oxford and later earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Microbiology from Leeds University, U.K. He teaches Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Environmental Forensics.

His area of expertise lies in toxin-producing cyanobacteria or blue-green algae. His research primarily focuses on detecting toxin-producing cyanobacteria in Malaysia, with a special emphasis on drinking water reservoirs in Penang. Additionally, his projects extend to other regions such as Indonesia, the United Kingdom, and Antarctica.

Dr. Jap has actively presented his work at conferences held in various countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Turkey, South Africa, New Zealand, Germany, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

RESEARCH PROJECT | BACK TO TOP

National (at the national level)

  • An exploratory study on the presence and expressions of cyanobacterial toxin encoding genes in Penang recreational and drinking water reservoirs
  • Exploring the ability of palm oil trunk and selected crop waste to control the toxin-producing cyanobacteria
  • Effecting zero waste management practices among farmers via knowledge transfer to community college instructors and a select farming community
