*Syakir specializes in environmental sustainability assessment of business processes, aiming to minimize the environmental impact associated with business activities.
Executive
As an Associate Professor and Council Member of the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), I am grateful for the enriching leadership insights through my journey. Prior to this role, I had the privilege of serving as the Coordinator and Deputy Director of the Centre for Business Development at USM, a position that enriched my understanding of organizational dynamics and strategic planning.
In my current role as Head/Coordinator of SAINSed program, We've embarked on a transformative journey, shifting our program from its conventional educational roots to an ISO 9001:2015 certified program offering professional courses in Business Management, Environmental Sustainability and ESG. This endeavor resonates deeply with USM's dedication to lifelong learning and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Research
My research is dedicated to studying environmental processes and impacts, developing sustainable management practices, and integrating innovative approaches to sustain ecological balance and resource sustainability.Through an interdisciplinary lens, I am committed to deciphering the intricate interplay between industrial/business activities and the natural environment, encompassing the study of ecosystems, human interventions, and the formulation of strategies for responsible resource stewardship.
Teaching
As a specialist in environmental sustainability assessment of business processes, my teaching philosophy centers on reducing the environmental impact of business processes either at the context of industry or community activities.I deliver a comprehensive curriculum covering a wide range of topics in environmental science and management for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, with a strong emphasis on sustainable practices.
My pedagogical approach combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications, focusing on critical areas such as life cycle perspective, carbon footprints, and water management with real-world case studies, equipping students with the tools to design innovative, sustainable solutions to complex environmental challenges.
Industry
Furthermore, I actively engage in strategic environmental management and sustainability initiatives within the industry. This includes the development of environmental and risk training modules, as well as providing consultancy services & training (HRD Corp TTT certified) on EMS 14001, Life Cycle Assessment (14040/44) and ESG reporting, contributing to the advancement of environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.
Community
As well, I engaged in a community-driven initiative that promotes regenerative agriculture as a circular economy strategy designed to enhance the adaptive capacity of paddy farmers. This project integrates sustainable farming practices to build socio-ecological system resilience against climate change, fostering a holistic approach to agriculture that prioritizes ecological restoration and productivity.
The initiative is guided by the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) framework, striving to create a balance between economic yield, environmental sustainability, and social empowerment. By focusing on long-term prosperity, the project aims to uplift the livelihoods of vulnerable farming communities while ensuring the sustainability of farming systems.
