Roots of Resilience: Plexus and PPTI USM Unite to Restore Mangroves and Advance SDG Goals


SUNGAI ACHEH, 13 June 2026 — The Roots of Resilience: Mangrove Restoration and Ecosystem Services Program" successfully brought together academia, industry, and local communities to revitalize a critical coastal ecosystem.
Led by Dr. Widad binti Fadhullah, the joint collaboration saw Plexus and the School of Industrial Technology (PPTI), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) join forces at the PIFWA Small Education Center in the Sg. Acheh mangroves. The initiative culminated in a massive planting effort, highlighting a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and hands-on education.
The success of the ‘Roots of Resilience’ program was driven by the diverse group of volunteers who gathered in the mud and water to make a tangible difference. The planting force consisted of:
- 100 Plexus Staff Members: Demonstrating corporate social responsibility and community engagement.
- 39 USM Students: Comprising third-year Environmental Technology undergraduates and MSc in Environmental Science students.
- 13 PIFWA and PIFWANITA Members: The driving force behind the Penang Inshore Fishermen Welfare Association leadership and management.
Working shoulder-to-shoulder, the team successfully planted 500 mangrove saplings of the resilient Rhizophora species along the Sg Chenaam coastline. These newly planted saplings will serve as a vital buffer for the coastal ecosystem, providing habitat for marine life and protecting shorelines from erosion.
Beyond the physical act of planting trees, the program contributes directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world environmental action.
The initiative served as a dynamic, living laboratory for the USM students in achieving SDG 4 Quality Education. Far from a standard volunteering event, the students were tasked with actively assessing the multifaceted ecosystem services of the mangrove area covering the regulating services, provisioning services, cultural services, and supporting services.
Mangroves are celebrated globally as one of the most effective natural tools against climate change. By planting 500 Rhizophora saplings, the collaborative team contributed directly to local climate mitigation under SDG 13 Climate Action. These plants will act as a powerful carbon sink, sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in their biomass and the surrounding soil at rates significantly higher than terrestrial forests.
In addition to driving SDG goals, the program strongly supports Malaysia’s National Planetary Health Action Plan. By focusing critically on the biosphere component, the project reinforces the fundamental understanding that human health, societal well-being, and economic resilience are intrinsically tied to the health of our natural environment.
