*Syakir specializes in environmental sustainability assessment of business processes, aiming to minimize the environmental impact associated with business activities.

As an Associate Professor School of Industrial Technology and Council Member of the Centre for Global Sustainability Studies (CGSS) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Dr Syakir brings together academic leadership, research, and practical industry insights to drive transformative change in environmental sustainability and community engagement.

As Director of the Community Network Office at USM, his leadership is exemplified through COMPASSION (Community Program for Sustainable Impact Mission), a cornerstone initiative that reflects the commitment of the Community Network Office to a transformative, sustainability-driven community engagement. He oversees multi-sectoral programs that integrate economy, social, culture, education, health, and environment, embedding ESG principles and aligning with MyRA, the SDGs, and USM’s APEX agenda. Through COMPASSION, the office advances collaborative solutions that empower communities and drive sustainable societal impact.

Previously, he served as Coordinator and Deputy Director at the Centre for Business Development, USM, where he developed management skills in strategic planning and organizational development. Building on this experience, he led the transformation of the SAINSed Program into an ISO 9001:2015 certified knowledge transfer platform focused on professional development. Through courses on Business Management, Environmental Sustainability, and ESG, he positioned SAINSed as a vital bridge between university research and community empowerment, enabling lifelong learning, amplifying community engagement initiatives in line with USM’s commitment to societal impact.

His research focuses on the natural and human-driven physical, chemical, and biological interactions that shape and sustain environmental systems, alongside sustainable management strategies and the critical nexus between business activities and ecosystem stewardship. He explores a diverse range of areas, including carbon footprinting, life cycle assessment, and climate resilience, advancing both scholarly inquiry and practical solutions that support sustainable development goals.

His teaching philosophy emphasizes the integration of theory and practical application, preparing future leaders with the skills needed for sustainable design and comprehensive environmental assessment. In parallel, he actively engages in industry training and consultancy, designing specialized modules on environmental management systems and sustainability practices for ESG reporting. Through these efforts, he supports businesses in implementing actionable, measurable strategies that drive meaningful progress toward their sustainability goals.

Central to his community engagement efforts is a deep commitment to advancing regenerative agriculture and circular economy solutions, with a focus on empowering vulnerable farming communities. Guided by ESG principles, he drives initiatives that harmonize environmental stewardship, social inclusion, and economic sustainability, strengthening community resilience in the face of climate change.
