"Turning waste into value through bioprocess innovation for a more sustainable future."
Expertise:
- Anaerobic Microbe and Process
- Fermentation to Produce Useful Chemicals and Gases
- Bioremediation, Renewable Biomass and Energy
- Waste Treatment by Biological Process
Ir. Dr. Husnul Azan bin Tajarudin is an Associate Professor in Bioprocess Technology at the School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He holds a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering from UTHM, an M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering from USM, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Swansea University. His expertise spans anaerobic microbial processes, fermentation for useful chemicals and gases, bioremediation, renewable biomass and energy, and biological waste treatment.
His research emphasises circular and sustainable bioprocessing, including food-waste valorisation into probiotic poultry feed, membrane bioreactors for leachate conversion, microbial fuel cells, biological preservation, and microbially driven materials. He has led national and industry-funded projects, commercialised probiotic chicken feed produced through two-stage fermentation of food waste, and holds Malaysian patents for the production of acetic and butyric acids and for probiotic poultry feed. His work integrates environmental engineering, biotechnology and agricultural applications to develop practical solutions for sustainable food systems, waste management and resource recovery
