Dr. Mohamad Hafizi Abu Bakar is a Senior Lecturer and Principal Investigator at the Bioprocess Technology Division, School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He also serves as a Research Fellow at the Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceuticals & Nutraceuticals (IPHARM), under the National Institutes of Biotechnology Malaysia (NIBM), Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI). Dr. Hafizi’s academic journey reflects his unwavering dedication to bioprocess innovation. He graduated with First-Class Honours in Biomedical Science from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 2012. Fueled by his passion for cutting-edge research, he earned a prestigious Fast-Track PhD in Bioprocess Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2015. During his tenure (Jan 2022 - Dec 2024) as Program Chairperson for the Bioprocess Engineering Technology program, he successfully led the academic management of undergraduate and postgraduate curricula, fostering excellence in both education and research for three years. His research expertise lies at the forefront of mammalian cell and tissue culture technology, multi-omics metabolomics biomarkers, and the mechanistic action of pharmacologically active compounds in combating inflammation, obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. His innovative work extends into nutrient sensing and metabolic signaling integration, functional biomaterials and bioceramics, as well as bioprocessing for cultured meat technology, an emerging field of cellular agriculture. His remarkable contributions to academia and research have been recognized through numerous accolades, including the Anugerah Sanggar Sanjung from Universiti Sains Malaysia for six consecutive years (2018–2023) for high-impact publications and the USM Excellence Service Award in 2021. His scholarly work has garnered over 1,000 citations, underscoring his influence in areas such as cell-based technology, metabolic signaling, tissue crosstalk, and cultured meat bioprocessing. A dedicated researcher and educator, Dr. Hafizi continues to push the boundaries of bioprocess innovation, paving the way for transformative advancements in cellular agriculture and the medical biotechnology sectors.

My research interests are devoted, but are not limited to, tissue-cellular crosstalk towards elucidation of pathophysiological mechanisms of metabolic diseases and their associations with inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction. Also, I'm currently investigating the therapeutics target of pharmacologically-active compounds derived from plant natural products and microalgae against numerous metabolic diseases.
