Postgraduate study in food microbiology focuses on the microorganisms and their reaction to foods and their related environments. Research in this area involves ecology, genetics, physiology and epidemiology of microbial spoilage and pathogenicity, and using microbial inhibitors to control microbial growth and death in the food system, and the beneficial microorganisms for food application
