On July 4, 2024, Bukit TI NaturEx 2024 was held involving the first- and second-year students from the Environmental Technology Division, Bioprocess Engineering Technology Division, School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia and some other minor students. This program was led by Dr. Widad Fadhullah and assisted by Prof. Dr. Norli Ismail, Dr. Mohd Saiful Samsudin and Dr. Mohamad Asyraf Kassim.
A total of 34 students between Form 1,2 and Form 3 from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Datuk Hj Mohamed Nor Ahmed, Penang was involved as one of the targeted community. The program focused upon various project exhibition booths focusing on these aspects:
- ๐พ Vermicomposting: Learn how to turn organic waste into nutrient-rich compost using worms.
- โป๏ธ Composting: Discover composting techniques to enrich soil health.
- ๐ฅ Biogas: Explore sustainable energy solutions by converting organic waste into biogas.
- ๐งผ Soap Making: Create eco-friendly soaps with natural ingredients.
- ๐ฌ Photobioreactor: Understand how microalgae can be used in plant growth
- ๐ Organic Pest Repellent: Learn to make natural pest repellents to protect your garden.
- ๐งช Ecoenzymes: Discover the benefits and uses of DIY ecoenzyme solutions.
- ๐ Various Urban Garden Plots at Bukit TI: Endeavour urban farming and grow your own food sustainably.
The goals of this program were o expose students to social sustainability, environmental, and economic aspects based on the fields of Environmental Technology and Bioprocess Technology at Bukit TI, focusing on:
1)Sharing knowledge and demonstrating simple, ecology-based technologies for kitchen waste processing with the community.
2)Introducing products that can be created from various natural resources to the community.
By participating in this program, students not only gain practical knowledge and skills but also learn the importance of preserving the environment for future generations aligned with SDG 4, 12, 13, and 15. Through interactive and hands on activities conducted at the 14 booth exhibitions, students are able to apply waste to resources projects and simple green technology, sparking their interest in STEM subjects. Overall, this student-community and environmental program is expected to serve as a bridge between students and the community by instilling in students the ability to balance environmental, social, and economic factors in their daily lives for a more sustainable future.
