Dr. Mohamad Hafizi Abu Bakar is a Senior Lecturer at the Bioprocess Technology Division, School of Industrial Technology, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He obtained the First Class Honor in Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in July 2012. Subsequently, he successfully completed his PhD study in Bioprocess Engineering at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in December 2015 under supervision of Prof. Dr. Mohamad Roji Sarmidi. During UTM 56th Convocation Ceremony, he received the 'Best Postgraduate Student Award' (PhD category) in Bioprocess Engineering.

Research

My research interests are devoted, but are not limited to, cellular metabolomics towards elucidation of pathophysiological mechanisms of metabolic diseases and their associations with inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction. Also, I'm currently investigating the therapeutics target of pharmacologically-active compounds derived from plant natural products and microalgae against numerous metabolic diseases.

  • Cellular biochemistry; unravelling metabolic pathways in model organisms of metabolic diseases including type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, inflammation.
  • Bioprocessing for nutrition and plant-based products.
  • Mitochondria, metabolomics, and lipodomic: identification of circulating biomarkers in obesity and type 2 diabetes subjects using multi-integrated omics approach.
  • Establishment of cellular disease models for mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation.
  • Mechanistic targets of pharmacologically active plant-derived natural products on cellular/animal models with metabolic diseases.
  • Bioprospecting of high value secondary metabolites from microalgae biomass extracts.
