Synopsis

Electronic structure and bonding. Acids and bases. An introduction to organic compounds and functional groups. Nomenclature and representation of the structure. Reactions of alkanes, alkenes and alkynes. Stereochemistry: the arrangement of atoms in space, The stereochemistry of addition reactions. Nucleophilic substitution reactions of alkyl halides, Elimination reactions of alkyl halides and compounds with leaving groups other than halogen. Structure, synthesis and reactions of alcohols, ethers and epoxides.

Course Objective

Provide students with basic knowledge of the structure and properties of organic chemistry, alkane structure and stereochemistry, chemical reactions, stereochemistry, alkyl halides (nucleophilic substitution and removal), structure, synthesis and reaction of alkenes, alkanes, alcohols, ethers and epoxides.

 ➤ Chapter 11: Alkuna

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Use structural and bonding knowledge to describe various organic molecules and functional groups including alkanes, alkenes, alkanes, alcohols, ethers and epoxides.
2. Use proper naming in organic compound naming.
3. Apply knowledge of organic reactions to discuss and solve various organic reactions.
4. Demonstrate the ability to use organic chemistry principles to explain the stereochemistry of organic reactions.
